Saving Lives – retrograde step?

Andrew Jackson has pointed out on his excellent blog (found here) that the latest ‘Saving lives’ document allows for peripheral IV device dwell time to drift to 96 hours. Having spent a few years hammering on about compulsory removal at 72 hrs with some success and following many ‘full and frank’ discussions with medical staff I feel personally that this is a major disappointment. If 72 hrs was right before why not now and if 96 is OK, where is the explanation?
